PANEL 3 OF 4: BUILDING YOUR BRAND – MENTORSHIP, SPONSORSHIP, NETWORKING AND MARKETING YOURSELF 

Networking cannot be underestimated as a great tool to progress your legal knowledge, practice area and progression through law. This session will focus on mentor/mentee relationships, how to get a mentor, how to utilise that relationship and how to work a room at functions; tips and tricks on how to build and raise your profile, how to build a network and client base, as well as how to best present yourself.

Stefanie Costi

STEFANIE COSTI is a lawyer, speaker and journalist. Stefanie holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney, and Juris Doctor and Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Technology, Sydney. She is currently a lawyer at Garland Hawthorne Brahe and works in the litigation team on commercial, property, insolvency and criminal law matters. As a journalist, Stefanie’s writing has appeared in numerous publications including the Australian Financial Review, Australian Women’s Weekly, Lawyers Weekly and the Greek Herald. Stefanie also frequently gives talks and hosts webinars on the subject of workplace bullying and is focused on the empowerment of law students and graduate lawyers.

MARIAL LEWIS is one of 52 accredited specialists in immigration law by the Law Society of NSW and of less than 100 nationally. Marial is the Principal Solicitor and Founder of Crossover Law Group, an innovative migration law firm in Sydney. Marial is a lecturer in the Graduate Diploma of Migration Law as well as a teaching fellow in the Juris Doctor and Undergraduate Law program teaching Administrative Law and Ethics in the University of New South Wales and Western Sydney University. Marial has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of NSW as well as a Masters of Legal Practice from the Australian National University. Marial’s matters range from the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Circuit Court, Federal Court and the High Court of Australia. Marial is on the Immigration Law Committee of the International Bar Association and the Law Society Specialist Accreditation Committee and is a member of the Human Rights Committees of the Law Society of NSW and Young Lawyers.

KARINE MCAULIFFE commenced her career in investment banking graduate recruitment working at Morgan Stanley and then Credit Suisse, alongside completing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Wollongong. After graduating, she moved to London, where she spent five years in various HR roles, both generalist and recruitment focused. Since returning to Australia in 2012, Karine has led internal recruitment functions in both the insurance and legal industries, and is now currently the Head of Talent Acquisition + People Support at Gilbert + Tobin.

LORI MIDDLEHURST leads Salesforce’s Asia Pacific and India employment law team, based Sydney. She has a distinguished career in both the United States and Australia as an in-house global employment law specialist and was recently awarded the NSW Women Lawyers Corporate (In-House) 2023 Lawyer of the Year for her contributions to mentoring, leading and supporting women lawyers. Her legal expertise also saw her recognised as the 2018 Lexology / Global Counsel APAC Employment Lawyer of the Year. Her many and long-standing contributions to the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) in the United States and Australia were recognised when she was named the 2020 ACC Robert I. Townsend, Jr. Member of the Year (out of more than 40,000 members globally). Lori is the immediate past ACC-NSW President, a non-executive director on the Board of ACC-Australia and a non-executive director of Inala, a not for profit that provides residential and day services for adults with severe disabilities. She is a regular volunteer on the employment law panel of Redfern Legal Services. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, San Diego and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis. Lori is licensed to practice law in both California and NSW. She is also a Graduate and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
