No matter what area of law you practice in, at some point it is likely that you will find yourself a part of the fast-paced and exciting world of litigation and advocacy. Before you do, come and hear from women who have a wealth of experience before the full range of Courts and Tribunals and learn about the etiquette, practice and procedure when dealing with the Bench, Counsel and even opposing representation! Our panellists have invaluable insights to help you become the most prepared and ready advocate that you can be, including how to keep your cool when the unexpected occurs.

SHARMILLA BARGON

REDFERN legal centre

Sharmilla Bargon is a specialist employment and discrimination law practitioner. She is a Senior Solicitor at Redfern Legal Centre and coordinates the Employment Rights Legal Service, a statewide employment rights service in NSW servicing migrant and vulnerable workers. In 2023 the Women Lawyers Association of NSW awarded her Community Legal Centre lawyer of the year. In the same year, she was one of the inaugural USYD Social Justice Academics In-Residence and in 2024 launched the report “Let’s talk about confidentiality: NDA use in sexual harassment settlements since the Respect@Work Report”. Following that work, she is keenly interested in how lawyers give effect to their professional obligations during advocacy, particularly during settlement negotiations.

NAOMI SHARP SC

Naomi Sharp After completing an associateship with Justice Gaudron at the High Court of Australia and lecturing in public law, Naomi was admitted as a solicitor in 1998 and called to the Bar in 2002.
Naomi has been a Senior Counsel since 2017 and has a broad practice encompassing contract law, constitutional law and public law, trade practices, financial services and competition. She also acts in environmental and other regulatory prosecutions, and regularly appears for and against State and Federal regulators and other agencies.
She has an LLM from McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, which she attended on a Lionel Murphy Postgraduate Scholarship and Max Stern Recruitment Fellowship. Naomi was the Chair of the Human Rights Committee at the Bar from August 2018 to mid-2021, and is currently the Chair of the Women Barristers Forum. Naomi was also awarded the Barrister of the Year Award at the Women Lawyers Association of NSW Awards in 2023.

Emma Boyce is a Senior Associate in Bartier Perry’s Dispute Resolution & Advisory team. She has a broad range of experience in general commercial disputes with a focus on insolvency and debt recovery. Emma has acted on matters across all NSW jurisdictions including the Court of Appeal of New South Wales, and also in Victoria, Queensland and WA.
Outside of her insolvency and debt recovery portfolio, Emma works on complex general commercial disputes matters with a focus on corporate matters, shareholder and partnership disputes, contract disputes, property disputes including lease and strata by-law disputes.
As a mentor in the Law Society of NSW Mentoring Program and the UNSW Career Discovery Mentoring Program, Emma enjoys giving back to the profession by making a positive impact on the development and progression of new lawyers.
