Law Society Elections

We are delighted to support Shauna Jarrett, Partner of Agostini Jarrett, long-term member and supporter of WLA NSW, current Executive Committee Member, and Councillor of the Law Society of New South Wales, in her nomination for the upcoming elections. We encourage you to vote and support Shauna as a running candidate and fellow member of WLA NSW. “The Law Society Council needs a cross section of representation from the profession to ensure that it remains viable and relevant to its members,” says Shauna.

“Women make up almost half the profession and it is vital that we retain a voice in the decision making body of the profession. I have been innovative in the introduction of policy and programmes that are working towards a realistic work/lifestyle balance for women in the profession. I am also committed to seeing the Council become more involved in the community, ensuring that all lawyers have a strong voice in political and legal/social arenas.”

Private Political Lunches an outstanding success

With the fabulous feedback and enthusiastic discussions amongst members and a majority representation of State female members of the Labor party on 16 September, we would like to remind members of our remaining political lunches.

We have some places available for members to participate in 28 October lunch with State female members of the Liberal Party and 17 November with the Cross-Benches. Providing an opportunity to network with the State female MPs, and to discuss the views and policies on issues that affect women and the law, places are limited, so book early.

Thank you! The Taskforce On The Tax Deductibility Of Care Costs (TTDCC)

Access to justice for people with an intellectual disability: seeking after-hours volunteer lawyers

Criminal Justice Support Network (CJSN) is a project of The Intellectual Disability Rights Service (IDRS) and are seeking practitioners with experience in criminal law matters to participate in an after hours emergency service, to provide people with intellectual disabilities with legal advice over the phone and at police stations outside of business hours. Training and insurance cover is provided.

Such advice and assistance is essential, and in supporting the CJSN project, WLA NSW encourages appropriately experienced members and colleagues to register their interest via info on our website ‘Community Corner’, or contact Carol Hannaford, IDRS 02-9318 0144 carol@idrs.org.au

Prevention of Workplace Bullying

Following the official launch of the CD, an initiative of the Legal Workplace Committee of the Law Society of NSW, the presentation by Shauna Jarrett as Chair of the Committee at our 26 August Newcastle seminar, was well received and initiated some interesting discussions on litigation aspects. The success of the seminar was significantly contributed to by co-presenter, clinical psychologist Tarnya Davis.
