Women Lawyers Association of NSW

21 August 2008

Dear Members & Colleagues

With over 200 people in attendance, our ‘Celebrating Women in the Judiciary’ cocktail event held on 24 July 2008 to celebrate the appointment of twenty two women to the bench since our last event in February in 2006, was an outstanding success. Click here to read the Press Release with further details and photos.

It was pleasing to see the announcement shortly following this event in regard to Julie Ward’s upcoming appointment to the Supreme Court. A partner at Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Julie Ward is the State's first female solicitor to be appointed directly to the NSW Supreme Court.

Our ‘Financially Fit for Life’ seminar on 7 August attracted an almost full-house and a great deal of interest. Our next event hosted by Clayton Utz on 28 August ‘Help! My daughter wants to be a Workplace Relations Lawyer!’ is detailed below.

I seek assistance from members in providing their proxy for the upcoming AWL AGM to be held on 13 September 2008 in Brisbane as noted below.

I would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate that our continuing operations and activities are dependent on the support from members. We have been fortunate with major sponsorship from NAB over the past years, however, this will not be continuing. If you have not yet joined or renewed please forward your renewal or application – we need your support.  Click here for Membership Form. If you are unsure about your membership status, please contact our Executive Officer on (02) 4392 1185 or at executive@womenlawyersnsw.org.au.

Yours faithfully,

Lee-May Saw
President

27 August 5.45PM Forum "Legal Profession: Myth Versus Reality"
Metcalfe Auditorium, The State Library, Macquarie St, Sydney
FREE Entry; Refreshments provided; RSVP: ylgeneral@lawsocnsw.asn.au

Is the legal profession a path to wealth, status and success? Or is the reality of the professions starkly different to this? What steps can be taken to ensure those wishing to enter the profession are aware of the reality of legal practice? How can law firms ensure that they can retain those young lawyers they hire? How can the legal profession ensure it is keeping up with the social and economic changes in society?  To answer theses questions and more, the NSW Young Lawyers’ Civil Litigation Committee in collaboration with the City of Sydney Law Society, Women Lawyers’ Association of NSW and NSW Young Lawyers’ Human Rights Committee invite you to join Mr Richard Ackland, Professor Ian Hickie, Deborah Stonley and Trish Carroll in exploring the reality of legal practice today. OTHER EVENTS & NEWS:

Federal Criminal Law Conference – 5 September 2008 Sydney
The Law Council of Australia and The New South Wales Bar Association will host a Federal Criminal Law Conference in Sydney. The primary purpose of the conference is to generate new ideas for reform of criminal law and procedure at the Commonwealth level. The Sydney conference will also provide the opportunity for the legal profession to develop a 'reform platform' that can be fed into, and presented at, a broader Federal Criminal Law Conference hosted by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department on 30 September 2008 in Canberra.

The format for the event will be reasonably informal, with speakers invited to talk on their nominated topic for approximately 20 minutes - followed by a period of general discussion. The conference will be followed by a dinner, to be held at The Establishment, for participants and interested barristers and solicitors. The Hon Bob Debus MP, the minister for home affairs, will deliver the conference dinner address. Compliments of Hopscotch Films: Limited Movie Passes to the preview weekend sessions 12-14 September – Caramel
http://hopscotchfilms.com.au/RSVP/Women-Lawyers/
Caramel is a cinematic treat in all senses of the word – a film rich in life and love. It’s about 5 women who meet regularly in a beauty salon, a colourful and sensual microcosm, where several generations come into contact, talk and confide in each other. These women share intimate secrets, fears, desires and reveal sacrifices that only audience members are privy to. Used as a product for the removing of unwanted hair in Beruit, caramel represents in more than just one way, the sweetness of life; it is also the idea of a delicious sugar that can also burn and hurt you.
