AWL 2014 brings together female practitioners, leaders and senior professionals from across the Australian legal sector to form new relationships, discuss ideas and learn from industry leaders. A signature event on the calendar of the Australian legal profession – the Conference will see managing partners, senior counsel, barristers, academics, in house counsel, public sector practitioners and female judicial officers in one place at one time. AWL 2014 will be held in Adelaide, SA from 3 – 5 October and is a fitting location; given South Australia was the first State to give women the right to vote, the first State to enable women to stand for parliament and the first State to appoint a female Justice to the Supreme Court.
Last year there were over 11,000 homeless women in NSW, and, of all the people seeking specialist homelessness services, 55% of women with children and 22% of all cases are escaping domestic violence*. PIAC’s Homeless Persons’ Legal Service provides free legal advice and representation to homeless people – by making a tax-deductible gift to PIAC’s Winter Appeal 2014you will help us to help others. *Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI)
The Law and Justice Foundation of NSW’s annual Justice Awards recognise the contributions that individuals and organisations have made to improving access to justice in NSW, particularly for socially and economically disadvantaged people.
The Women in Prison Advocacy Network (WIPAN) changes the lives of some our community’s most vulnerable women. WIPAN is a small organisation (an NGO charity) that makes a big impact, with long term social benefits. WIPAN is unique in NSW, one of our programs trains and supports volunteers, women from all walks of life, to be matched to, and then mentor a woman who has just come out of prison.
In NSW, 42% of women released from prison end up back in prison within 2 years – however, 80% of women mentored or supported by WIPAN have stayed out of prison. Yes that could be due to a whole range of contributing factors, although WIPAN certainly has been a huge contributing factor. The women mentored by WIPAN say so themselves.
A grant that would have allowed WIPAN to deliver services and programs to 150 women was taken away by the current Federal Government. Now we’re asking you to help. If you’d like to get involved or make a donation, email WIPAN at info@wipan.net.au or call 02 8011 0699 or go to the website at http://www.wipan.net.au
