The Women Lawyers Association of New South Wales Incorporated (‘WLANSW’) is the peak professional body representing women lawyers in NSW. We are committed to improving the status and working conditions of women lawyers since before our incorporation in 1952. We have a diverse membership made up of women lawyers ranging from female pioneers of the legal profession, senior legal leaders and the emerging next generation of women lawyers.
The Awards are supported by the Bar Association, the Department of Communities and Justice, and the Association of Corporate Counsel Australia.
Since our inaugural awards dinner in 1995, the Awards recognise the outstanding women lawyers, mentors and firms who have not only achieved excellence in legal practise but have advanced the opportunities for women in the law.
In 2023, the WLANSW WILL PRESENT THE AWARDS IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES
Open to all current members of the WLANSW. Nominees will have made an outstanding contribution to the legal profession, provided by leadership and demonstrated supporting and advancing women in the legal profession.
Nominees will be women lawyers with less than five years’ post qualification experience.
Nominees will be women barristers that hold a current practising certificate issued by the NSW Bar Association and may be Senior or Junior Counsel.
Nominees will be women holding a current practising certificate and working in a private law firm.
Nominees will be women holding a current practising certificate and working in a private law firm.
Nominees will be women in a legal capacity working for non-government corporate entities or organisations.
Nominees will be women working in a legal capacity either in a government organisation or statutory
Nominees will be women lawyers working in community or not-for-profit organisations.
Nominees will be women lawyers working in the legal academic organisations or entities.
Open to all men and women lawyers who have demonstrated mentorship, advocacy and sponsorship of talent that is invaluable to the development, promotion and retention of women within the profession.
The successful law firm will demonstrate measures taken that has led to women being advanced in the legal profession by action taken to remove the gender pay gap, targets for partnership and advancement in managerial and senior roles, sharing of care arrangement, adoption and reporting on Equitable Briefing Policy and framework/ policies for addressing and eradicating sex discrimination, sexual harassment and bystander policies which alleviates the burden on individuals making complaints and places a positive obligation on all employees to change the culture and encourage compliance; observance of the Charter of Advancement of Women in the Legal Profession, and mentoring.
Firms interested in Nominating for this award are not required to be current corporate members of WLANSW but must have offices located in NSW and employ staff who are, or are eligible to be members of the WLANSW.
A formal application outlining and capturing why the Law Firm should be selected for this award should be no longer than 5 pages including all relevant supporting material.
