Deputy President Alex Grayson

Alex Grayson
(DEPUTY PRESIDENT FAIR WORK COMMISSION)

Alex Grayson is a Deputy President of the Fair Work Commission, having been appointed in July 2023.

Prior to her appointment, she was a lawyer for approximately 17 years.

Her last roles before appointment to the Commission were as a Principal Lawyer running Maurice Blackburn’s employment and industrial law division and as an independent director and chair of the Operations Committee of multibillion-dollar superannuation fund Hostplus for almost a decade. She was also a proud member of the Executive Committee of the Women Lawyers Association of NSW and the Employment Law Committee of the Law Society of NSW for many years prior to her appointment.

Her experience also includes having been the National Industrial Officer at the Finance Sector Union, Senior Associate at W G McNally Jones Staff and Tipstaff to Justice Staff at the Industrial Relations Commission of New South Wales.

She has run significant Fair Work Commission cases including, most recently, the Aged Care Work Value case. She has run cases in most courts including the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of NSW, the Federal Court of Australia, District and Local Courts and the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW. These matters have involved discrimination matters, sexual harassment, awards, enterprise agreements, industrial action, minimum wages, equal remuneration, dismissals and bullying.

Joanne Shepard

JOANNE SHEPARD
(Counsel – 12 wentworth selborne)

Joanne was called to the bar in 2006. She appears in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Federal Court and High Court as well as Commissions of Inquiry in areas including insolvency, financial services, regulatory, equity, corporations and commercial law.

Most recently she appeared in the High Court, led by N.C. Hutley SC, on behalf of the successful appellants in Walton v ACN 004 410 833 Limited (formerly Arrium Limited) (in liquidation) [2022] HCA 3 (16 February 2022) in a case concerning the examinations power under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). She also recently appeared, unled, for a former senior officer of Crown Resorts Limited in each of the Crown state inquiries comprising the Inquiry under section 143 of the Casino Control Act 1992 (NSW) (the Bergin Inquiry), the Royal Commission into the Casino Operator and Licence (Finkelstein Inquiry) and the Perth Casino Royal Commission. Joanne also appears for and advises ASIC in civil penalty proceedings including in Australian Securities and Investments Commission v MLC Nominees Pty Ltd [2020] FCA 1306, led by T Faulkner SC, in which ASIC obtained its highest recorded civil penalty of $57.5 million.

Lian Chami

Lian Chami

With over 15 years of legal experience, Lian Chami is a highly regarded expert in dust diseases litigation and historical liability claims. She brings a strong background in alternative dispute resolution, ensuring practical and cost-effective solutions for her clients.

Lian’s practice focuses on dust-related claims, where she provides strategic legal counsel to a range of clients, including NSW government agencies in transport, education, public works, and health under the Treasury Managed Fund (TMF), as well as Comcare matters on behalf of the Commonwealth Government. Lian also acts for a number of ASX listed self-insureds, managing their national portfolio of claims.

Known for her efficiency and pragmatic approach, Lian is committed to achieving the best possible outcomes, whether through resolution or litigation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History, Politics, and Philosophy from Western Sydney University and has built a strong reputation for her expertise in tort law, dispute resolution, and legal strategy.
