Her Say! News, Views & Events – April 2014

Dear Members and Friends,

The Women Lawyers Association of NSW has kicked of the year with a number of new events and initiatives in line with our new purpose “Empowering Women, Transforming Law”.

This year, we are transforming the resources available to our members so please read on to discover what’s on in April.

“Empowering Women”

In March this year, the Women Lawyers’ Association launched the “Women Lawyers Network” to empower and inspire women to create the career they want. We launched our new blog and two new event series, ‘Workshops Over Wine’ and ‘Inspiration before Breakfast’. The ‘Workshops over Wine’ series brings you thought leaders and world shakers presenting a short workshop on the skills you need outside of technical expertise to create the career you want. The ‘Inspiration before Breakfast’ series is designed to get you excited about being a woman in law by sharing exciting and thought provoking ideas over breakfast platters and coffee.

Workshops over Wine Series : Our first ‘Workshops over Wine’ was launched on 5 March by TEDx speaker Julia Palmer who presented to a sell-out crowd on “The Future of Face to Face Networking”. The next event is on the 14th April, “The Brain, Blues and Burnout – The Biology of Depression” with guest speaker and psychiatrist, Dr Kathryn Lovic and is now open for registration

Inspiration Before Breakfast Series: Our first event is on 1 May with Jen Dalitz, CEO of SheEO and management consultant. Jen will discuss the importance of finding your own definition of success. This event will be open for registration shortly.

Newcastle Chapter: For our regional members, our Newcastle Chapter Subcommittee has been feverishly working on local events and we congratulate them on their relaunch at the Lovett Gallery in the Newcastle Region Library, ‘Trailblazing Women, Art & The Law’ on 19th March, which received fabulous support and feedback. We look forward to viewing the photos and receiving details of their next events.

Women Lawyers Network Blog (new): The Women Lawyers Network Blog is posted weekly on our Linkedin Groupand brings you news, ideas and resources that can be read in one billable unit. Jump in and follow the blog here: http://womenlawyersnetwork.wordpress.com

 Transforming Law”

‘Celebrating Women in the Judiciary’:I had great pleasure in welcoming The Hon Justice Ruth McColl AO as guest speaker at our signature biennial event ‘Celebrating Women in the Judiciary’ on 27th February in a glittering evening attended by judges, magistrates, and senior council among the distinguished guests at the Union University & Schools Club of Sydney. Our Press Release received considerable exposure as did Justice McColl’s speech

Pictured below L-R: our Patron, the Hon. Acting Justice Jane Mathews AO, with attending appointees, the Hon Justice Margaret Beazley AO, the Hon. Justice Julie Ward, Judge Sarah Huggett,  Judge Sharon Norton, the Hon Justice Melissa Perry, Magistrate Carolyn Huntsman, the Hon. Justice Kathleen Farrell,  Magistrate Karen Robinson, Magistrate Katherine Thompson, and myself. Please click here to view the photo gallery from the event.

Workplace Gender Equality Act (proposed changes to reporting): We were pleased the Government chose to spare reporting standards under the Workplace Gender Equality Act in this latest round of red-tape appeal. Thank you to our Workplace Practices Subcommittee who co-ordinated and finalised our Press Release and follow up letters to Government senators and the Prime Minister. We will continue to monitor the issue to ensure the Government sees gender reporting as a business essential, and not red-tape, and keep it off the repeal list.

National Attrition and Re-engagement Study: Continuing gender discussions, The Law Council report into the National Attrition and Re-engagement Study has been released and may be viewed on their website by clicking hereThe  key findings in Executive Summary on pages 5-7 and the recommendations on page 8 make for interesting reading and discussion.

This year will see a number of new initiatives and pilot programs to add value for our members and make a real difference on your experience as a woman in law. We encourage those with memberships due to expire to renew and encourage friends and colleagues to join the Association. Details about how to join are available on our website or through this link.

Kind regards,

LUCY MENTORING PROGRAM for Female Law Students at University of Wollongong – Request for Mentors
(Please note that some students come from Sydney and others are happy to travel to Sydney)

Through the LUCY program we aim to connect female university students with a ‘mentor’ who is working in the corporate, public, private and not for profit sectors,  with the following objectives:

  • Communicate the diversity of opportunities available for women in the private and public sector and the personal advantages of achieving job satisfaction;
  • Provide an opportunity to work with senior business and professional managers;
  • Provide access to a network of senior women in the private and public sector, particularly for those women from disadvantaged backgrounds; and
  • Provide a program which will encourage active decision making about careers.

The success of this program relies on the involvement and support of successful and inspiring women working in senior positions in industry. The program will run between 12th June and 18th September this year. Further information on the program and the responsibilities of mentors are fully detailed on the website – http://www.uow.edu.au/careers/wlp/LUCY/index.html Please click here to download the information flyer.
