This event is co-hosted by WLANSW, Women Barristers Forum and the Diversity & Equality Committee of the Bar Association of New South Wales.

Afghani Event for website

15 August 2023 marked 2 years since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan. Freedoms that women were afforded during the 20 year occupation have been swiftly removed, in contradiction to pledges made by the Taliban. The UN reports 3 million Afghan’s have been internationally displaced and 5 million have fled their country.

Come and join us for a panel discussion chaired by her Honour Judge Tupman of the District Court of New South Wales, with two Afghan women judges both of whom resettled in Australia after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in 2021.  They will speak about their experience as judges in a civil law system, including a comparison between the systems in Afghanistan and Australia. The panel will also discuss issues of gender equality and pathways to legal practice in Australia available to resettled Afghan judges.
