Her Say! News, Views & Events – February 2014

Dear Members and Friends,

On behalf of the Association – Happy New Year! We hope you are settling into the year ahead and wish you great happiness, health and prosperity in 2014.

To launch our 2014 year, we have great pleasure in welcoming The Hon Justice Ruth McColl AO as guest speaker at our signature biennial event ‘Celebrating Women in the Judiciary’ on 6pm Thursday 27th February at UUSC. For more information about this event, please see the details below.

Late last year, we asked you ‘What Change do you want to see in profession?  and received a surprising response. Over a quarter of respondents asked us to champion a more flexible legal profession, where work/life balance can be achieved, followed closely by a legal profession where talented women have what they need to progress unimpeded into leadership positions. These results have told us that we need to look at these issues with a fresh perspective and design initiatives to drive meaningful change. We thank you for sharing your views on how we can make the legal profession a better place for women and becoming part of the solution. Please click here to read our Media Release with full details, which was also reported by Lawyers Weekly and The Australian

We have listened carefully to your responses, stories and ideas. The Association has been busy planning an exciting new year with a focus on making a meaningful impact on your experience as a woman in the law. We are excited to now set in motion a series of new initiatives arising from your ideas and feedback.

In a matter of weeks we will be launching the Women Lawyers Network. A community built to empower and inspire women to create the career they want. Our dream is to build the Women Lawyers Network into a thriving community of practical resources, mentoring, coaching and network building opportunities to empower and inspire you to create the career you want. As a valued member of the Association, you can expect to receive invitations to a series of new innovative events held in both mornings and evenings, where you will be inspired and excited to be a woman lawyer and learn the practical skills essential to success in the legal profession. More information about the new event series, including our Breakfast Series hosted quarterly by McCullough Robertson “Inspiration before Breakfast” and our Twilight series hosted by Norton Rose Fullbright Australia “Workshops over Wine” will be provided in a matter of weeks with our first event secured for 5 March 2014.

In March 2014, we will be launching the new Women Lawyers Network Blog, with guest posts from women who are industry speakers and thought leaders in fields including building your brand, networking, speaking with influence, preparing for maternity leave, professional styling and financial management. We will also continue our focus on thought leadership and seek out opportunities to lead conversation about how flexibility can be achieved in the legal profession.

We ask your continued support of our flagship annual events including “Law as a Career-Coming to the Bar” free public event during Law Week 12-18 May 2014, our biannual The Janet Coombs Lunch for New Female Barristers hosted by WBF & WLANSW, Friday 16th May & Friday 12th September, and our annual Golden Girls “High Tea” Luncheon Friday 14th November at The Law Society of NSW. Another date to note is Australian Women Lawyers National Conference to be held in Adelaide Friday 3rd October 2014.
