‘The Power of Two’ Job-Share Resource Guide Launch
Guest Speaker: Kate Mills, CEO of ProfessionalMums.net
12.30 for 12.45pm start – 2pm, Thursday 14th May 2015
McCullough Robertson Lawyers, Level 16, 55 Hunter St, Sydney

Job-sharing is a type of flexible working arrangement that can offer women more potential for career advancement than part-time roles. Please join us for the launch of this initiative which we are proud to support in conjunction with ProfessionalMums.net.

Kate Mills (pictured) has worked in media for 20 years with her most recent role as editor of BRW. She started her career in legal journalism in London and has followed the changes in the professions ever since. Over that time she has seen how hard it is for mothers to remain working in the profession and established ProfessionalMums.net in 2013 as a platform to connect highly skilled women with flexible work opportunities. Kate is also the CEO of the Financial Executives Institute, a not-for-profit focused on mentoring.

WLANSW Members $15; Non-Members $25; includes light lunch and a copy of the Guide; limited places. Please click here for further details and registration.

WLANSW Newcastle Chapter
‘Wellbeing & Meditation’ in the practice of law

Guest Speaker: Chamundai Jackie Curran
5.30pm -7pm, Thursday 14th May 2015
Newcastle Club, 40 Newcomen Street, Newcastle

“Mental health issues are a growing concern amongst the legal profession. In a field where the ability to consistently perform competently at a very high level is expected, most are, understandably, reluctant to admit to any vulnerabilities. This trend is not only confined to long-standing practitioners, but also affects law students completing their studies, as well as recent graduates entering the profession for the first time.” Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation http://www.tjmf.org.au/

Chamundai Jackie Curran is a lawyer, spiritual teacher and healer, and expert in conflict resolution with more than 20 years experience in the law. She has been practising and teaching meditation for the past 10 years and now shares that experience in a practical way with the legal profession to bring better health and inner peace. Visit www.shantimission.org for further information.

Meditation can benefit you by:
– Better clarity of thinking, inspiration and creativity
– Improved memory
– Reduced stress and related illnesses
– Clearer communication
– Reduces depression and anxiety
– Brings sound sleep
– Improves confidence, performance and productivity

We hope you can join us for an evening of networking and inspiration. FREE – bookings essential.

Anne Summers In Conversation with Elizabeth Broderick
City Recital Hall, Sydney at 6.30pm 7 May 2015

As she nears the end of her eight years as Sex Discrimination Commissioner, this is an opportunity to hear Elizabeth Broderick review and assess the ways in which Australia is now a better place for women.

During her term, Elizabeth helped instigate paid parental leave, started a national discussion about pregnancy discrimination, campaigned against domestic violence, revealed the abuse of women in the Australian Defence Force and has created the Male Champions of Change, a group of 25 leading CEOs who have pledged to gender equality in their companies. She has also championed gender equality on the international stage and was recently recognized for this by Hillary Clinton.

Elizabeth has served longer than any of her predecessors and so is extremely well placed to talk about how the Sex Discrimination Act has operated since 1984 to both identify and provide remedies against discrimination against women.

Elizabeth and I will engage in a focussed and, I trust, informative discussion of the progress that Australian women have made and the barriers that still stand in the way of full gender equality. The evening will also be an opportunity for us to express our gratitude and appreciation to Elizabeth Broderick for all the work she has done for Australian women.

On boarding session for lawyers returning from parental leave

Becoming a working parent impacts your role and responsibilities in and out of the workplace. Although the experience of parenting will be different for each individual there are many areas in common for working parents. This seminar provides an opportunity to hear from a panel of female lawyers describing their experiences, challenges and strategies to better manage parental leave transition back into the workplace.

These sessions are part of the initiatives being developed by the Managing Partners and senior leaders from many of Australia’s major law firms who have been working on ways that their firms can contribute to improving gender diversity across the legal profession. The initiatives were identified in response to the Law Council of Australia’s National Attrition and Re-Engagement Study last year, which highlighted issues impacting women in the legal profession.

Participation is open to any lawyer in Australia. Please click here to download pdf.
