PANEL 1: Things I wish I’D KNOWN. TIPS, Tricks & insider knowledge

This session covers the things we all wish we had been told at Uni or when we started our first jobs as lawyers. The panelists, all WLANSW 2023 Award winners, with an impressive and broad range of experience in corporate, government and in-house practice, will share their insight and practical tips and tricks from lawyers in practise. Our first session of the series will be an invaluable opportunity to get answers to the burning questions you’re afraid to ask!

Sally McClauslanD

NSW Department of Communities and Justice

Sally has worked across a range of legal roles including supervising lawyer at a community legal centre, in a large law firm, as inhouse corporate counsel, as a legal practice owner and in her current role as a Principal Solicitor in the NSW government. She was awarded Woman Lawyer of the Year at the 2023 NSW Women Lawyers Achievement Awards for her work promoting access to justice for women and in mentoring women entering their legal careers. She is currently a volunteer professional mentor to law students in the Dalyell Scholars program at the University of Sydney.

Taylah Spirovski

HWL EBSWORTH

Taylah Spirovski is a Litigation Lawyer at HWL Ebsworth Lawyers and President of NSW Young Lawyers. In August 2023, Taylah was awarded ‘Woman Lawyer of the Year (under 5 PQE)’ by the Women Lawyers Association of NSW.

Taylah is deeply committed to social justice and community advocacy. Taylah is the youngest board member of Women Illawarra (a not-for-profit community organisation run by women for women affected by domestic violence), as well as the Chief Executive Officer of youth-led human rights organisation, Voices of Influence Australia.

Taylah also represents Australia within the Young Commonwealth Lawyers Association’s Australasia Hub.

Lori Middlehurst

Salesforce

Lori Middlehurst leads Salesforce’s Asia Pacific and India employment law team, based Sydney. She has a distinguished career in both the US and Australia as an in-house global employment law specialist and is the 2023 NSW Women Lawyers Corporate (In-House) Lawyer of the Year. Her legal expertise also saw her awarded the 2018 Lexology / Global Counsel APAC Employment Lawyer of the Year. Her many and long-standing contributions to the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) in the US and Australia were recognised when she was named the 2020 ACC Robert I. Townsend, Jr. Member of the Year (out of more than 40,000 members globally). She is the immediate past ACC-NSW President, served for 5 years on the Board of ACC-Australia and is a non-executive director of Inala, a not for profit that provides residential and day services for adults with severe disabilities. She is a regular volunteer on the employment law panel of Redfern Legal Services.

Taylah GRAY

ABORIGINAL LEGAL SERVICE

Taylah Gray, a Lawyer and PhD candidate, is a passionate advocate for social justice and Indigenous rights. Proud of her Wiradjuri heritage, Taylah began her legal career at the Aboriginal Legal Service before pursuing civil law. She made history as the first Aboriginal woman undertaking a PhD in law at the University of Newcastle, focusing on Native Title and economic theories to foster economic growth and land reform for First Nations communities.

Taylah’s influence extends to platforms like Q&A, the Drum, and a TedX Talk, where she shares insights on her work and research. Committed to increasing access to justice for First Nations women and communities, she shapes her early career around this critical mission.
